PHARMAXIS has taken a step towards getting its treatment for a debilitating lung disease on the market, with the drug developer lodging a marketing application with the Therapeutic Goods Administration.

Bronchitol has passed phase III testing for the treatment of bronchiectasis, a lung disease suffered by 18,000 Australians, 70% of whom are moderately or severely incapacitated by the condition.

The drug, designed to clear away mucus in sufferers of a variety of lung diseases, comes as a powder

and is breathed in from a hand-held inhaler.

The Australian drug regulator has a year to review the application.
